Two disciplines, one set of decisions

Sustainable product design and sustainable AI are usually treated as separate conversations. They are not. Both come down to what you build, how much of it, and how hard it has to work.

Sustainable products

A leaner product costs less to run, loads faster, and lasts longer before it needs rebuilding. The environmental case and the commercial case point the same way.

  • Build less. Features nobody uses still cost compute, maintenance and attention. S-RICE ranks the backlog with that cost counted.
  • Weight the trade-offs. Impact³ scores social, environmental and economic effects side by side, so they are argued about before launch.
  • Design for longevity. Fewer dependencies, less bespoke complexity, and a handover that lets someone else maintain it.
  • Measure what ships. Page weight, load time and hosting emissions treated as product metrics, not an afterthought.

Sustainable AI

The footprint of an AI feature is set by architecture, not intent. Model choice, call volume and caching decide the bill — and the emissions behind it.

  • Right-size the model. The largest model is rarely the right one. Most tasks are served by something smaller, faster and cheaper.
  • Cut wasted calls. Caching, batching and retrieval instead of repeated inference. The cheapest query is the one you never make.
  • Question the feature. Some things do not need AI at all. We will say so — it is usually the largest saving available.
  • Track cost per outcome. Tokens and compute measured against value delivered, so the number means something to your board.

The same lever moves both. Deciding not to build something is the most effective sustainability measure there is — and the only one that also gives you time back.
